Common questions about health cover

No — SNS will cover emergencies and ongoing care. But many expats add private cover for two reasons: faster access to non-urgent specialists, and a private room if hospitalised. Both are areas where SNS provides a basic but slow service.
It depends on age, residency, whether you split time with the UK, and what you want the cover to do. Bronze covers accident & emergency only; Silver adds in-patient hospitalisation; Gold Plus adds out-patient (GP visits + specialists) plus maternity. Most retired expats settle on Silver or Gold Plus. Call us — we’ll talk it through.
Yes — IMG plans pay claims at the major Portuguese private hospitals (Lusíadas, CUF, HPA on the Algarve) with direct settlement at most network providers. The plan also works elsewhere in the EU and (depending on tier) worldwide.
IMG plans are international by design — if you move within Europe your cover usually continues unchanged. If you move outside Europe or to the US, we’ll switch you to the right international plan at the next renewal (or sooner if needed).
Once we receive payment, the policy is bound immediately. The IPID and Policy Wording are emailed the same day, and the IMG membership card arrives within a few working days.
